Dining out in Charleston, South Carolina
So we found ourselves in the Charleston area for Callie’s Birthday. I always like to surprise her and was looking for an extra nice place for a birthday dinner. I remembered that Husk started in Charleston and I have heard it was one restaurant not to miss. My parents raved about it, and they are dead on when it comes to restaurant recommendations. When it comes to recommending TV shows, they are hit or miss, but with restaurants they are always right on the money. I used my trusty OpenTable app to book a table for the 4 of us to celebrate her birthday and was pretty happy with myself.
Well, as my mother likes to say “man’s plans are god’s jokes”. Needless to say our plans changed and we decided to hit Savanna first. I had to let Callie in on my surprise. But if I have to be honest, I was the one that really wanted to check out Husk. Luckily, we were able to change the date and after a long day checking out Magnolia Plantation and a walking tour of Charleston we headed to the restaurant for a nice family dinner out.
Our experience at Husk matched its reputation. We had a great waitress that started us off with two tasty Old Fashions, and to Jackson’s delight, a cold bottle of Cheerwine (straight from Salisbury NC). We sat on the patio, and while we were a little chilly, the heat lamps kept warmed us up. One note of advice, while at a very nice restaurant, do not make yourself at home and move heat lamps closer to your table, even if the kids beg you. I came close to melting the Edison bulb light strand that crisscrossed the patio before the manager showed me my mistake and moved the lamp. Slightly embarrassing lesson learned.
Back to the meal. Needless to say, it was excellent. I always enjoy the look on a servers face as my 8 and 10 year old kids order from a very adult focused menu. They both went with the Royal Red Shrimp with House Kielbasa, and “Brandade” Dumplings. They both crushed it. Callie won the night with the Crispy Catfish and Edisto Island Grits, while mine was a close follow up with their Heritage Pork.
Dinner was followed by coffee (with a little Bailey’s) and desert. Their home made cookies were tasty and Sloan gobbled them up, but the Chocolate Chess Pie was perfect, tasted just like campfire s’mores on steroids.
The entire meal was excellent. While the food was great, the night with the family was really the best part. We had time to enjoy each other, chat about our day, and share a great meal. It was one of those moments that reminded me why we went on this adventure. Thanks Charleston and Husk for a great day.
