Dining Out in Key West, Florida

We arrived in the keys on a beautiful Friday afternoon and had the day to check out the RV resort, hit the beach, and grill out as we enjoyed the warm weather. Saturday morning we decided to travel down through the rest of the keys and check out Key West. I had heard many of the stories of Key West and was not sure what to expect. But I did want to make sure we checked out the local cuisine.

So off we went, family of four with the dog in tow, cruising though the keys on our way to explore Key West. We parked on Duval Street and walked down to the beach area. As you all know, I try to scope out restaurants and plans for where to eat about an hour before the tribe turns on me. Down along the water was nice, but the restaurants were packed and we had the puppy. Trying to get some advice, I asked the gentlemen working the tour desk on the corner “hey, what restaurants along here will let me bring in the pup.” He gave me a sideways glance and stated, “pretty much any restaurant around here.” Got to love the Keys. So with that piece of advice, I asked, “Ok, what should we check out.” “One of my favorites is a little place called Banana Cafe,” was his reply. Well luck was in our favor, as they not only had a table, but it was outside and welcomed Roxy. She actually got a bowl of water before we even got our drinks.

Have to say my man was right about the Banana Cafe. Great bunch spot with tasty food and a friendly staff. Self promoted as a French Bistro with a Caribbean twist, and the description was dead on. As we looked at the menu, Callie and I gave each other that look “drinks?” It was 1pm on a beautiful Saturday in Key West so, why not? The pitcher of Key Lime Sangria arrived and was well enjoyed.

With crepes, omelets, and sandwiches all on the menu, I could not decide what I wanted, but since I had a craving for seafood, I went with the Blackened Mahi sandwich. The house made key lime tartar sauce is what sold me. Callie and Jax followed my lead with the Cobb Shrimp Salad and the Florida Lobster BLT. Sloan went for the Classic Burger and won with those fries.

Perfect spot, great brunch, and nice little buzz as we wandered back out to explore Key West. Thank you kind stranger for the recommendation. When in Key West we suggest brunch at the Banana Cafe.
